Notes from the Field.

The Challenge: Limited Time for Professional Reading

K-12 science and engineering educators strive to stay current with the latest research, innovative practices, and evolving pedagogical approaches. However, the demands of classroom teaching leave little time to thoroughly read and digest the wealth of professional literature available.

"Notes from the Field" serves as a professional learning resource for busy science and engineering educators who want to enhance their practice with research-based strategies but have limited time for extensive reading.

By bringing together the best ideas from multiple sources, we aim to support our community of science educators in delivering high-quality, engaging, and effective science and engineering instruction for all students.

The Solution: SDSP Notes from the Field

The San Diego Science Project's "Notes from the Field" addresses this need by providing concise summaries of high-quality articles on science and engineering education. Published monthly, these Notes offer a regular infusion of curated professional literature for busy educators. Our Teacher Leaders:

  1. SELECT the most valuable, research-based, and practical articles from reputable sources in science and engineering education.

  2. SUMMARIZE key insights and actionable strategies that can be implemented in K-12 science classrooms.

  3. CURATE content that aligns with current standards, research-backed practices, and innovative approaches to science and engineering education.

Our Selection Criteria

When selecting articles for "Notes from the Field," our Teacher Leaders ask:

  • Will this article help improve science and engineering teaching and learning?

  • Is it supported by evidence of positive impact in real classrooms?

  • Does it provide actionable strategies that teachers can implement?

  • Does it present innovative approaches or thoughtfully revisit fundamental concepts?

  • Does it address common challenges or misconceptions in science education?

  • Does it include authentic classroom examples and student experiences?

  • Does it connect to standards and curricula relevant to K-12
