In today’s digital world, students encounter scientific claims everywhere—through social media, news outlets, online searches, and generative AI tools. Whether it’s a headline about climate change or a viral post promoting a health supplement, students need the skills to critically evaluate the information they see.
At the Science Media Literacy Workshop, educators will engage with an interactive, classroom-ready framework grounded in the research of Douglas Allchin and aligned with NGSS #8: Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information. This session focuses on helping teachers translate science media literacy into actionable classroom practice.
Workshop Goal
Learn how to use practical frameworks and lesson activities to support students in evaluating science claims and identifying misinformation in the media.
Participants will
-
Explore practical frameworks for analyzing science claims in media
-
Engage in lesson activities that can be directly implemented with students
-
Learn strategies to help students evaluate source credibility and evidence
-
Identify common techniques used to misrepresent or distort scientific information
-
Design learning experiences that connect to where students encounter science in everyday media
